Taiwanese steam coal imports totalled 5.1m tonnes in March, up 8.4% m-o-m but still were 4.1% lower y-o-y. Imports from Australia increased to 2.6m tonnes, up 14.3% m-o-m and up 12.2% y-o-y.
Indonesian supplies jumped to 1.3m tonnes, up 51.4% m-o-m and 1.9% y-o-y. Russian deliveries totalled 710KT, up 21.8% m-o-m but still were 29% lower y-o-y. Imports from South Africa fell to 240KT, down 67.5% m-o-m and down 22.6% y-o-y.
Taiwanese imports of steam coal declined to 14.8m tonnes in Q118, down 1.2m tonnes or 7.4% y-o-y as concerns over air pollution and environment bite into coal-fired power generation. This is consistent with the decline in Taipower’s coal-fired generation to 14.5TWh in Q118, down 8.2% y-o-y.
Australian deliveries decreased to 7.7m tonnes, down 550KT or 6.7% y-o-y. Imports from Indonesia slumped to 3.4m tonnes, down 600KT or 15.1% y-o-y. Russian supplies fell to 2.1m tonnes, down 240KT or 10.4% y-o-y. Only imports from South Africa rose to 1.1m tonnes over the period, up 440KT or 70.5% y-o-y.
