PWCS exports reached 8.9Mt in April, down 8.6% y-o-y

PWCS coal exports totalled 8.9m tonnes in April, up 3.7% m-o-m but still were 8.6% lower y-o-y. This includes steam coal exports, which totalled 8m tonnes, up 4.8% m-o-m but still were 7.6% lower y-o-y. Coking coal shipments declined to 890KT, down 5.7% m-o-m and down 16.9% y-o-y.

PWCS only provides split per destination for hard coal. Exports to Japan totalled 4.5m tonnes, down 3.6% m-o-m but still were 13% higher y-o-y. Shipments to China increased to 1.5m tonnes, up 56.3% m-o-m but still were 18% lower y-o-y. Exports to Taiwan totalled 1.4m tonnes, up 4.7% m-o-m but still were 18.7% lower y-o-y. Shipments to South Korea declined to 680KT, down 21.8% m-o-m and down 48.5% y-o-y.

PWCS exported 34.9m tonnes of hard coal over the Jan.-April period, down 670KT or 1.9% y-o-y. This splits between steam coal exports, which increased to 30.7m tonnes, up 150KT or 0.5% y-o-y; and coking coal shipments which declined to 4.2m tonnes, down 820KT or 16.4% y-o-y.

Hard coal exports to Japan increased to 18.8m tonnes, up 490KT or 2.7% y-o-y. Shipments to Taiwan increased marginally to 4.6m tonnes, up 50KT or 1.1% y-o-y. On the other hand, shipments to China declined to 4.3m tonnes, down 290KT or 6.3% y-o-y. Exports to South Korea declined to 3.5m tonnes, down 660KT or 15.7% y-o-y.
