Australian steam coal exports totalled 16.8m tonnes in September, up 2.8% m-o-m but 8.7% lower y-o-y. Exports to China declined to 2.7m tonnes, down 15.9% m-o-m and down 4.4% y-o-y. Shipments to Japan also fell to 7m tonnes, down 5.9% m-o-m and down 8.2% y-o-y. Exports to Thailand decreased to just 150KT, down 67.6% m-o-m and down 75.4% y-o-y.
On the other hand, exports to South Korea surged to 3.3m tonnes in September, up 47.4% m-o-m and up 44.6% y-o-y. Shipments to Taiwan totalled 2.3m tonnes, up 37.8% m-o-m but 25% lower y-o-y. Shipments to Malaysia rose to 580KT, up 31.2% m-o-m and up 12.7% y-o-y.
Australia exported 149.5m tonnes of steam coal over the first 9 months of the year, up just 500KT or 0.4% y-o-y. Exports to Japan and China increased to 60.7m tonnes and 30.6m tonnes respectively, up 4.1% and 22.2% y-o-y. On the other hand, Australian exports to South Korea declined to 23.9m tonnes, down 1.3m tonnes or 5.2% y-o-y. Shipments to Taiwan decreased to 17.4m tonnes, down 1.5m tonnes or 7.8% y-o-y Exports to India and Malaysia declined to 2.8m tonnes and 4.5m tonnes respectively, down 18.5% and 6.6% y-o-y.
