Japanese steam coal imports declined to 9m tonnes in September, down 14.8% m-o-m and down 15.1% y-o-y. Australian supplies declined to 6.4m tonnes, down 12.9% m-o-m and down 18.2% y-o-y. Russian supplies decreased to 920KT, down 15.1% m-o-m and down 16% y-o-y. Imports from Indonesia totalled 910KT, down 19% m-o-m but still were 46.8% higher y-o-y. The US supplied 200KT, down 5.5% m-o-m but this still was 70.3% higher y-o-y.
Despite the fall in September’s output, Japanese steam coal imports increased to 89.2m tonnes over the first 9 months of the year, up 4.7m tonnes or 5.6% y-o-y. Australian supplies increased to 62.3m tonnes, up 1.5m tonnes or 2.5% y-o-y. Deliveries from Indonesia increased to 10.4m tonnes, up 1.3m tonnes or 13.9% y-o-y. Imports from Russia increased to 7.8m tonnes, up 350KT or 4.7% y-o-y. The US delivered 1.4m tonnes over the Jan.-Sept. period, up from 660KT supplied in the corresponding period last year.
