German steam coal imports declined to 2.9Mt in August, down 11.2% y-o-y

German steam coal imports continued to decline in August, falling 11.2% y-o-y to 2.9m tonnes, even if this was up 36.2% m-o-m. Russian supplies increased to 1.6m tonnes, up 50.4% m-o-m and up 42.7% y-o-y. Shipments from the US increased to 480KT, up from 200KT delivered in July, but still below the 640KT imported in August 2016. On the other hand, Colombian deliveries plunged to 340KT, down 19.4% m-o-m and down 69.4% y-o-y.

Germany imported 23.8m tonnes of steam coal over the first 8 months of the year, down 3m tonnes or 11.3% y-o-y. Russian shipments held up relatively well, at 11m tonnes, down 690KT or 5.9% y-o-y. However, Colombian deliveries fell sharply  to 4.8m tonnes, down 2.3m tonnes or 32.1% y-o-y. Imports from the US also declined during the period to 3.7m tonnes, down 2.5m tonnes or 40.4% y-o-y.
