PWCS coal exports declined to 9.3Mt in September, down 4.6% y-o-y

PWCS hard coal exports totalled 9.3m tonnes in September, up 16.2% m-o-m but still were 4.6% lower y-o-y. This includes steam coal shipments, which totalled 7.9m tonnes, up 13.6% m-o-m but still were 2.3% lower y-o-y. Coking coal exports totalled 1.4m tonnes, up 34.1% m-o-m but still were 15.8% lower y-o-y.

PWCS only provides data for hard coal exports, which are specified below. Shipments to Japan declined to 5m tonnes in September, down 0.8% m-o-m and down 17.9% y-o-y. Exports to China declined to just 400KT, down 40.3% m-o-m and down 49.4% y-o-y. On the other hand, dispatches to South Korea increased to 1.8m tonnes, up 91.3% m-o-m and up 63% y-o-y. Shipments to Taiwan totalled 1.1m tonnes, up 38.2% m-o-m but still were 41.3% lower y-o-y.


PWCS exported 79.9m tonnes over the first 9 months of the year, down 1.9m tonnes or 2.3% y-o-y. Steam coal exports, declined to 68.8m tonnes, down 2m tonnes or 2.8% y-o-y. On the other hand, coking coal shipments increased to 11.1m tonnes, up 100KT or 0.9% y-o-y.

Shipments to Japan increased to 42.5m tonnes over the Jan.-Sept. period, up 2.4m tonnes or 5.9% y-o-y. Exports to South Korea increased to 10.7m tonnes, up 620KT or 6.1% y-o-y. On the other hand exports to Taiwan declined to 10m tonnes, down 1.1m tonnes or 10.3% y-o-y. Shipments to China declined to 8.4m tonnes, down 1m tonnes or 11.1% y-o-y.
