Japanese steam coal imports remained steady in August

Japanese steam coal imports totalled 10.6m tonnes in August, down 2.9% m-o-m but still were 23% higher y-o-y. Australia remained the top supplier to Japan in August delivering 7.4m tonnes, up 5.9% m-o-m and up 27.3% y-o-y. Supplies from Indonesia declined to 1.1m tonnes, down 30.2% m-o-m and down 3.3% y-o-y. Imports from Russia totalled 1.1m tonnes, down 26.3% m-o-m but still were 19.8% y-o-y.

Japanese imports of steam coal increased to 80.2m tonnes over the first 8 months of the year, up 6.3m tonnes or 8.5% y-o-y. Australian supplies increased to 55.9m tonnes, up 3m tonnes or 5.6% y-o-y. Despite the deep in August’s deliveries, Indonesian supplies increased to 9.4m tonnes during the Jan.-August period, up 970KT or 11.5% y-o-y. Imports from Russia also increased to 6.9m tonnes, up 530KT or 8.3% y-o-y.
