Thailand’s steam coal imports increased to 2.3m tonnes in August, up 58.2% m-o-m and up 14.7% y-o-y. Indonesian deliveries increased to the highest level since May 2016 at 1.8m tonnes, up 51.3% m-o-m and up 11.3% y-o-y. Australian supplies reached the highest level since April 2016 at 480KT in August, up from 290KT in July and up from just 150KT delivered in August 2016.
Thailand imported 15.2m tonnes of steam coal over the Jan.-August period, up 850KT or 5.9% y-o-y. Despite the hike in August deliveries, steam coal imports from Indonesia declined to 11m tonnes, down 320KT or 2.9% y-o-y. On the other hand, Australian supplies increased to 2.8m tonnes, up 350KT or 14.7% y-o-y.
