Vietnamese coal imports increased by 10.4% y-o-y in August

According to preliminary data published by Vietnamese customs authorities, Vietnam imported nearly 1.3m tonnes (1.27) of coal in August, down 4.3% m-o-m but still 10.4% higher y-o-y.

Vietnam, traditionally coal exporter, is shifting into an importer to meet its increasing domestic demand as its power sector is expanding.

In August, Vietnam imported 505KT from Indonesia, up 69.5% y-o-y. Shipments from Russia and Australia increased to 365KT and 295KT respectively, up 49.2%  and up 19.8% y-o-y

Vietnam imported 9.3tonnes of coal over the Jan.-August period, down 580KT or 5.9% y-o-y.
