South African steam coal exports remain capped, dropping below 5m tonnes in July to 4.9m tonnes, down 30.6% m-o-m and just 1.6% higher y-o-y. This is the lowest they’ve been in a year. Shipments to India slumped to their lowest level since January, at 1.7m tonnes, down 41.8% m-o-m and down 29.9% y-o-y. On the other hand, exports to Pakistan jumped to 650KT, up 40.9% m-o-m and up 112.8% y-o-y. Shipments to South Korea totalled 370KT in July, down 37.3% m-o-m. No shipments to South Korea were reported in July last year.
South African shipments increased to 44.4m tonnes over the Jan.-July period, up 4.4m tonnes or 10.9% y-o-y. Exports to India declined to 19.3m tonnes, down 4.5m tonnes or 18.9% y-o-y. However, shipments to Pakistan increased to 5.2m tonnes, up 2.3m tonnes or 77.8% y-o-y. Exports to South Korea also surged to 4.1m tonnes, up from a meagre 170KT over the same period last year.
