According to confirmed data, Colombian steam coal exports totalled 7.1m tonnes in July, up 11.7% m-o-m but still were 16.2% lower y-o-y. Shipments to Europe declined to 2.1m tonnes, down 9.4% m-o-m and down 43.3% y-o-y. Exports to Europe’s top destination, the Netherlands, totalled 840KT, up 39.1% m-o-m but still were 51.3% lower y-o-y. Shipments to other European destinations such as Spain, Portugal and Italy declined during the month. Exports to Spain declined to 490KT, down 0.7% m-o-m and down 27.6% y-o-y. Shipments to Portugal decreased to 320KT, down 50.1% m-o-m and down 34% y-o-y. Dispatches to Italy also decreased to 250KT, down 39.8% m-o-m and down 19% y-o-y.
Colombian steam coal exports declined to 49.8m tonnes over the first 7 months of the year, down 750KT or 1.5% y-o-y. Shipments to Europe declined to 17.1m tonnes during the period, down 2.9m tonnes or 14.3% y-o-y. Dispatches to the Netherlands declined to 6.2m tonnes, down 3.9m tonnes or 39% y-o-y. Exports to Italy also declined to 1.5m tonnes, down 690KT or 30.9% y-o-y. On the other hand, exports to the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal) increased to 3.9m tonnes and 3m tonnes respectively, up 72.1% y-o-y and up 7.6% y-o-y.
Colombian steam coal exports to the MED area (Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and Israel) totalled 1.6m tonnes in July, up 4.6% m-o-m but still were 26.3% y-o-y. Shipments to Turkey, declined to 1.1m tonnes, down 8.5% m-o-m and down 39% y-o-y. On the other hand, exports to Israel increased to 510KT, up 48.8% m-o-m and up 50.4% y-o-y.
Shipments to the MED area increased to 12m tonnes over the Jan.-July period, up 160KT or 1.3% y-o-y. Dispatches to Turkey increased to 9.4m tonnes, up 380KT or 4.2% y-o-y. On the other hand, shipments to Israel declined to 3.4m tonnes, down 130KT or 5.3% y-o-y.
Steam coal exports to Far Eastern destinations totalled 650KT in July, down 32.55 m-o-m but still were 87% higher y-o-y. Shipments to Japan increased to 240KT, up from 200KT in June. No shipments to Japan were reported in July 2016. Exports to South Korea totalled 170KT, down 43.1% m-o-m but still were 1.2% higher y-o-y. Colombia also delivered 170KT to India and 80KT to Taiwan.
Colombian shipments to Far East declined to 3.9m tonnes over the Jan.-July period, down 220KT or 5.3% y-o-y. Exports to South Korea increased to 1.8m tonnes, up 1.2m tonnes or 190% y-o-y. Shipments to Japan increased to 880KT, up 710KT from just 160KT delivered over the corresponding period in 2016. On the other hand, shipments to India declined to just 500KT, down 2.2m tonnes or 81.3% y-o-y.
