Australian steam coal exports increased in May

Australian steam coal exports increased to 16.4m tonnes in May, up 1.9% m-o-m and up 2.2% y-o-y. Shipments to Japan increased to 7.7m tonnes, up 44.8% m-o-m and up 22.7% y-o-y. Exports to Malaysia increased to 510KT, up 19.4% m-o-m and up 15.65 y-o-y; while shipments to Thailand increased to 280KT, up 21.5% m-o-m and up 80.3% y-o-y.  Dispatches to India totalled 280KT, up 176.5% m-o-m but still were 37.1% lower y-o-y. On the other hand, shipments to South Korea decreased to 2.2m tonnes, down 15.9% m-o-m and down 12.6% y-o-y. Exports to Taiwan decreased to 1.6m tonnes, down 35.7% m-o-m and down 22.8% y-o-y. Dispatches to China totalled 3.5m tonnes, down 17.5% m-o-m but still were 17.3% higher y-o-y.


Australian steam coal shipments increased to 80.7m tonnes over the first 5 months of the year, up 400KT or 0.5% y-o-y. Exports to Japan increased to 33m tonnes, up 2.1m tonnes or 6.8% y-o-y; while exports to China increased to 16.5m tonnes, up 4.8m tonnes or 41.5% y-o-y. Exports to Taiwan increased to 9.5m tonnes, up 200KT or 2.2% y-o-y. Dispatches to Thailand increased marginally to 1.8m tonnes, up 0.5% y-o-y. On the other hand, shipments to South Korea decreased to 12.3m tonnes, down 3.6m tonnes or 22.6% y-o-y; while exports to India decreased to 1.5m tonnes, down 700KT or 32.3% y-o-y. Exports to Malaysia were also down to 2.4m tonnes, down 200KT or 5.9% y-o-y.
