Australian steam coal exports totalled 15.9m tonnes in April, down 2.8% m-o-m and just 1.6% higher y-o-y. Exports to China performed strongly, rising to 4.2m tonnes, up 36.5% m-o-m and up 91.5% y-o-y. Shipments to Taiwan also increased to 2.3m tonnes, up 21.9% m-o-m and up 17.3% y-o-y.
On the other hand, shipments to Japan declined to 5.3m tonnes, down 18.1% m-o-m and down 6.7% y-o-y. Dispatches to South Korea remained unchanged from March at 2.5m tonnes, although this was also 15.5% lower y-o-y. Exports to Thailand and India also declined to 230KT (down 47.6% m-o-m and down 60.4% y-o-y) and 140KT (71.2% m-o-m and down 67.8% y-o-y) respectively.
Australia exported 63m tonnes of steam coal over the Jan.-April period, down 1.2m tonnes or 1.9% y-o-y. Shipments to Japan increased to 25.3m tonnes, up 600KT or 2.4% y-o-y. Exports to China increased to 12.8m tonnes, up 4.1m tonnes or 47.7% y-o-y. Dispatches to Taiwan increased to 7.7m tonnes, up 500KT or 6.2% y-o-y. On the other hand, shipments to South Korea declined to 9.9m tonnes, down 3.6m tonnes or 26.6% y-o-y. Exports to Thailand declined to 1.5m tonnes, down 100KT or 7.9% y-o-y. Dispatches to India were also down to 1.3m tonnes, down 500KT or 29.3% y-o-y.
